The holidays are a great time to be with family, but they also remind us of those who are no longer with us.
First Thanksgiving without Mom
Joshua Walters
I called up my first love
We usually reach out once a year
For a traditional birthday call
This year she had lost her mom
I called to console her
This Thanksgiving was going to be the first without her mom there
She told me it had been a really hard year for her
I wanted to say something comforting
But I was at a loss for words.
“Sorry for your loss,” or “My condolences” can sound like a
pre-programed message
On the phone there were moments of trying to make pauses pass
I finally started to list her family; sister, husband, children
And in the end said that her mom lives on…
In her children and grandchildren
I think it is a good thing to remember
We may lose our loved ones,
But they live on,
In us.
