Following this month’s announcement that young immigrants will no longer be protected under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals policy (DACA), PEERS’ Latino/a/x American Action Team (LAAT) has decided to issue a statement opposing the Trump administration’s decision to end the program.
Rescinding DACA leaves hundreds of thousands of hardworking, law-abiding young people without a viable future in this country. The stress and uncertainty deriving from this decision will no doubt produce negative mental health outcomes for these young people, as well as for countless others in our communities. This decision perpetuates fear and xenophobia, and undermines the core American values of diversity, tolerance, and inclusion.
The LAAT asserts that all US residents deserve the opportunity for citizenship. Dreamers have contributed significantly to the American economy and, more importantly, have strengthened American society as a whole. The health and wellbeing of our communities depend on supporting those who are most vulnerable and welcoming newcomers to our country, regardless of identity or place of origin.
With or without DACA, the LAAT will continue to support the Dreamers and advocate on their behalf. Human connection and resilience will overcome fear and division.
